The New York Timesleads with a look at how the number of prisoners at the Bagram detention center in Afghanistan keeps on increasing. The Bush administration has spent more than $30 million over the past three years to transfer detainees to a center operated by the Afghan military, but it has far less capacity than expected so the “makeshift American site” is unlikely to go out of business anytime soon. The site at Bagram had “barely 100″ prisoners in early 2004 and now holds 630 detainees, which is more than double the number at Guantanamo.
USA Todayleads with its new poll of New Hampshire voters that shows how the candidates who were once front-runners in each party continue to shed support. Sen. Barack Obama polls at 41 percent and now holds a 13 percentage-point lead over Sen. Hillary Clinton. Meanwhile, Sen. John McCain was the choice of 34 percent of those polled, compared with Mitt Romney’s 30 percent, a difference that is still within the margin of error. The Los Angeles Timesleads with Clinton’s furious campaigning efforts in New Hampshire, where voters go to the polls on Tuesday. “Clinton is undeniably on the defensive,” says the LAT. The Washington Post’s lead purports to take a look at how both Clinton and Romney are getting more aggressive in attacking their fellow candidates, but it spends the bulk of the story talking about the New York senator’s efforts. The Wall Street Journal leads its world-wide newsbox with how candidates from both parties “have embraced change” after the Iowa caucuses.

Conditions for detainees at Bagram are reportedly far worse than Guantanamo, although everyone agrees they have improved since two prisoners died there in 2002. The NYT got hold of a confidential Red Cross memo that said some prisoners at Bagram had been held “incommunicado for weeks or even months” in isolation cells, where they were hidden from inspectors and sometimes treated harshly in violation of the Geneva Conventions. The military always justified the prison’s shoddy living quarters (”most prisoners are fenced into large metal pens”) by saying it was just temporary.
USAT’s new polling data echoes a CNN-WMUR poll, which had a smaller sample size but showed similar trends of a rising Obama and McCain. Also of note from USAT’s poll is that Mike Huckabee has 13 percent, compared with Rudy Giuliani’s 8 percent, which is the same amount of support that Rep. Ron Paul received.
The Post says Clinton “has taken direct control over her strategy” and is ordering staff members to aggressively target Obama as a candidate of good talk, but no action. At campaign rallies, Clinton continued to point out how Obama acted like a regular politician when he got to Washington by, for example, voting for the Patriot Act and Iraq war funding, and then led her supporters in a “that’s not change” chant. Clinton is working hard to drive home the message that just because Obama can give a rousing speech doesn’t mean he’s ready to be president. “You campaign in poetry. You govern in prose,” she said at a campaign rally (the Post’s Dana Milbank points out her husband used that same line in 1993). The LAT notes that Clinton is no longer giving long policy speeches, her events are more upbeat, and she is also making herself more available to reporters. Despite the positive message, the Clinton campaign seems to recognize it might fall short tomorrow and so is also trying to play up the importance of other states, notes the LAT. But there’s a clear reason for the nervousness, because, as USAT points out, “for more than three decades” the contender that won both Iowa and New Hampshire ended up receiving the nomination.
In order to appeal to younger voters, Chelsea Clinton is taking a more prominent role in her mother’s campaign, notes the WSJ. Meanwhile, Bill Clinton isn’t getting the kind of crowds that he’s used to, says the NYT on Page One. The former president is having trouble filling big venues, or at least he did at a handful of events right after his wife’s loss in Iowa.
After he was attacked from all sides on Saturday, Mitt Romney came back swinging yesterday and criticized McCain and Huckabee on a few issues, including immigration and taxes. The NYT says that a few of the exchanges between Romney and Huckabee “were some of the most testy and angry of the Republican campaign to date.” It’s all seen as a sign that Romney’s “big-budget, highly organized campaign may be on the verge of a spectacular collapse” if he loses tomorrow, says the WP. For his part, Huckabee has “toned down his religious message” in order to appeal to a wider base, notes the WSJ.
Obama’s campaign is touting the victory in Iowa particularly to black voters who may think the country won’t elect a black president. Volunteers are under explicit instructions to say that Obama “proved the cynics wrong.” It’s clearly working for some, but others are still skeptical and note that a general election is very different from a Democratic primary.
Those who still aren’t satisfied with the current crop of candidates might find their salvation in Lou Dobbs beats by dre, says the WSJ. Dobbs has never said he’s planning on running but talk of a potential candidacy is increasing in a few circles.
In other news, the LAT fronts an interesting dispatch from Burma that says the country’s military junta might have done the burgeoning opposition a favor when it threw so many protesters in jail last fall. Those who wanted to work against the government always had trouble organizing because they never knew who they could trust. But after spending days in crowded cells, protesters were able to exchange contact information and stay in touch after the majority of them were released. The opposition leaders dream of some outside intervention to help their plight, but the LAT quotes an “unusually blunt” Western diplomat who said they can keep dreaming and shouldn’t expect anything more than “words” of support.

BEIJING (Reuters) – A woman at the center of China’s biggest political scandal in two decades, wife of deposed political leader Bo Xilai, had once dressed as a military commander last year in a bizarre episode that shines new light on the collapse of Bo’s inner circle.
Bo, ambitious former leader of China’s biggest municipality Chongqing, was sacked in March after police began investigating his wife, Gu Kailai, on suspicion of murdering a former family friend, British businessman Neil Heywood Windows 7 Serial, in a row over money.
News of Bo’s removal and the murder allegation against his wife, who is a lawyer and businesswoman Windows 7 Key, emerged only a month ago, but new details uncovered by Reuters show the house of Bo was already in chaotic decline at the time of Heywood’s death.
The new details, provided by sources with knowledge of the police case against Gu, include that she is alleged to have poisoned Heywood after the Briton demanded a 10 percent cut for his role in organizing a large, illicit money transfer for her.
A few days after Heywood was killed in Chongqing, southwest China in November, Gu strode into a meeting of police officials wearing a military uniform and gave a rambling speech in which she told the startled officials that she was on a mission to protect the city’s police chief, Wang Lijun, the source said.
“First she said that she was under secret orders from the Ministry of Public Security to effectively protect Comrade Wang Lijun’s personal safety in Chongqing,” said the source, adding that she wore a green People’s Liberation Army (PLA) uniform with a major-general’s insignia and bristling with decorations.
“It was a mess,” he said of Gu’s speech, which circulated among some police and officials. “I reached the conclusion that she would be trouble.”
It was not clear to those present why Gu, who had never served in the military, had put on a PLA uniform or what she was trying to convey with her vow to protect Wang, the source said. The incident Office Project Key, on or about November 20, left the officials even more bewildered about her mental state, he added.
At that time, Heywood’s family had been told that there were no suspicious circumstances and that he had died of a heart attack brought on by excessive alcohol consumption.
Only later did Wang begin probing Heywood’s death, treating it as a poisoning and identifying Gu as chief suspect. He revealed his suspicions to Bo at an explosive meeting in January, sources said. The police chief then fled to a U.S. consulate in February, hiding inside for more than 24 hours before leaving into the custody of central government officials.
Wang had been the spearhead of Bo’s anti-corruption drive in Chongqing, a plank in the politician’s barely concealed campaign to enter the topmost ranks of the ruling Communist Party.
HEYWOOD ‘DEMANDED 10 PCT’
Gu’s appearance in PLA uniform was part of a cascade of extraordinary events that have led to China’s worst leadership crisis since the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown, months before the party anoints a new generation of top leaders.
There had been rumors circulating in elite circles that Gu had been assigned a military rank, but officials dismissed them as an attempt to brandish her authority and background.
Her uniform was of the same rank as her father’s, a PLA leader who fought the Japanese occupation in the 1930s and 1940s, and might have been given to her out of “respect for her father”, said a second source with knowledge of the incident.
Even if Gu was somehow entitled to the uniform, which the sources doubted, the civilian setting in which she showed her apparent military rank made her performance disturbing and politically troublesome, they said.
“That was clearly a violation of disciplinary rules, a serious one,” said the first source with ties to Bo and his family, referring to talk among officials that Gu had assumed a military title. “Even her background gives her no right to do anything like that.”
Gu and the family’s 32-year-old aide, Zhang Xiaojun, have been named as the main suspects in the murder of Heywood, whose body was found in a Chongqing hotel room on November 15. Chinese authorities say he was poisoned.
Bo, who was suspended from the elite Politburo last month, could later face a police investigation as well.
Neither Bo nor Gu has been allowed to answer the accusations in public. Heywood’s family has also declined to comment.
Chinese government ministries have not responded to written questions about the case against Gu.
A source citing details from Wang’s testimony to investigators said Gu became angry and increasingly distrustful with Heywood after he demanded “at least 10 percent” to move a large sum abroad for her.
Sources had previously said Heywood demanded an unspecified proportion of the deal that Gu considered too large.
“It was a large amount, probably from a dirty deal, and Heywood was also nervous about handling it,” said the source. He said he did not know the size of the offshore transaction.
It remains unclear how Heywood might have helped Gu shift money offshore. Chinese citizens are only allowed to transfer $50,000 out of the country each year.
BO’S MISGIVINGS
Long before Gu’s alleged falling out with Heywood, Bo voiced misgivings about her involvement in business, according to another British businessman who had dealt with Gu and Heywood.
“He hated what she was doing,” said Giles Hall who dined with Heywood and the Bo family on a visit to China a decade ago, recalling a heated conversation overheard between Bo and Gu.
“There was an agitated conversation going on. There were a few threats being made. We were a bit nervous. We were in this restaurant. We said (to the interpreter) ‘What’s the problem?’ and the interpreter said ‘Her husband does not like her business dealings’. So he wasn’t happy with it.”
Hall, who was trying to tempt Bo to set up a tourism venture involving a hotair balloon, said Gu showed a ruthless streak.
“You couldn’t cut her up (cross her) that was for certain. She said to me ‘You cross me – never come to China, you’ll never get out of jail’. There was no mucking about.”

PORTSMOUTH replica watches, Virginia (Reuters) – Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney slammed the Obama administration on Thursday for its handling of Chinese dissident Chen Guangcheng’s case replica watches, calling it “a day of shame.”
The blind dissident is under Chinese control in a Beijing hospital after taking refuge in the U.S. Embassy and then leaving it in a deal between the Chinese and U.S. governments.
Chen originally appeared to approve of the agreement, but now says he fears for his and his family’s safety if he stays in China under the arrangement, which Washington had called a good outcome for the dissident.
At a campaign event in Virginia, Romney suggested the Obama administration may have convinced Chen to leave the embassy to try to curry favor with the Chinese authorities.
“If these reports are true, this is a dark day for freedom and it’s a day of shame for the Obama administration,” he said.
The presumptive Republican presidential nominee said the U.S. Embassy may have “failed to put in place the kind of verifiable measures that would ensure the safety of Mr. Chen and his family.”
Romney has taken a hard line on China as he catches up with President Barack Obama in opinion polls ahead of the November 6 election.
He has threatened trade sanctions against the world’s No. 2 economy if it does not halt what he says are currency manipulation, unfair subsidies and rampant intellectual property theft.
Only days after Obama scored points against Romney on the first anniversary of the killing of Osama bin Laden, the Chen case has given the Republican a chance to accuse his rival of showing weakness abroad.
DEFEND FREEDOM
“We are a place of freedom here and around the world and we should stand up and defend freedom wherever it is under attack,” he said.
Romney’s comments were unusually direct given that U.S. Cabinet members are in Beijing right now to try to secure Chinese cooperation on trade and flashpoints such as North Korea, Iran and Syria.
Chen’s appeal on Thursday for asylum in the United States fanned U.S.-China tensions and threw into doubt the agreement used to coax him out of hiding in the embassy [ID:nL4E8G304H]
Romney said there were reports that Washington communicated to Chen an implicit threat to his family and perhaps sped up his decision to leave the embassy “because they wanted to move on to a series of discussions that (Treasury Secretary Timothy) Geithner and our Secretary of State (Hillary Clinton) are planning on having with China.”
The White House denied that the U.S. Embassy coaxed Chen to leave so as to avoid conflict between Washington and Beijing, where Clinton and Geithner are to hold talks on Friday.
“There was no pressure of any kind placed on him by U.S. officials replica watches,” White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters.
“At no point during his time in the embassy did Mr. Chen ever request political asylum in the U.S. And at every opportunity, he expressed his desire to stay in China, reunify with this family, continue his education and work for reform in his country,” Carney said.

Police are refusing to say whether bikies are behind an illegal bar in Sydney's CBD where alcohol and possibly drugs were available. Tattoo Guns For Cheap

Superintendent Garry O'Dell says investigations are underway into what the premises were being used for.

When I received my latest issue of Poets and Writers Magazine, I did what I always do: I put it in a special place on the nightstand, where I could devour it after finishing work, dinner, dishes, and putting my youngest son to bed. I’ve been subscribing to this magazine for many years, and the ritual is always the same. I treasure each issue for the same reasons my software engineer husband loves his subscription to Technology Review: these magazines help us feel connected professionally, and keep our dreams of being successful alive.
Imagine my horror, then, when I read the interview in this recent issue with Ben Fountain, one of my favorite fiction writers since the appearance of his brilliant collection of stories, Brief Encounters With Che Guevara, in 2006, and stumbled across this quote: “It’s slightly ridiculous to be fifty-three years old and about to have your debut novel come out…There is an absurd and pathetic aspect to that…”
Really, Mr. Fountain? Really? These are the words of inspiration you have for the rest of us, on the eve of publishing your novel, Billy Lynn’s Halftime Walk, with Ecco?
Come on. It’s not like writers are ballerinas who can’t do splits without injuring ourselves after a certain age Tattoo Machine Supply, or even football players too fat to run. Is it?
Or maybe it is. For a little while after I read that interview, I was fretting, thinking my prime must have zipped by me so fast that I didn’t notice it leaving me behind. I didn’t have the successful law practice Mr. Fountain had before luxuriating in the full-time writing life (courtesy of his very supportive attorney wife). I am a working mom, a fixer-upper of houses, and a wife. All of that means that I’m juggling more spinning plates in the air than I can count, and yes, I do occasionally drop one and smash it. Should I feel absurd and pathetic? Or even slightly ridiculous, on the eve of my own debut novel?
Many years ago — when I was a mere slip of a girl, scarcely 32 years old — I had a short story “almost accepted,” as I joyously raved to friends, by an institution no less brag-worthy than the Atlantic Monthly. After receiving compliments in a letter from the magazine’s fiction editor at the time, I decided to zip on down to the stately Atlantic offices in Boston. Since I had no day care, I brought my first child with me, a son who today is old enough to be writing his own fiction.
The Atlantic editor was a curmudgeonly New Englander outfitted in a Mr. Rogers cardigan. He very gallantly admired not only my fiction, but the baby as well. Then, after we discussed the state of fiction at some length — at such a length that I had to nurse my baby right there in the office, to keep him quiet — the editor said something that made my blood run cold: “The thing is, you’re a little too old to be called promising.”
Of course I was crushed. Once I could pick myself up off the chair Top Tattoo Inks, I gathered the baby, stuffed him into his snowsuit, and drove back to my seedy little apartment north of Boston, weeping the entire way home.
Did I stop writing? For a few days. And then I had another story idea, and another, and yet one more, and soon I was happily weaving together sentences for my own amusement. I got an agent, who tried to sell my novels but failed, until finally he sold my memoir. I cobbled a living together as a journalist and essayist, still writing fiction, still failing to sell it. Until, one day, I did.
It took me 25 years to sell a novel. I am Tattoo Gun, as the venerable Steven Tyler said recently on American Idol, “Much too young to be this old.” And yet I don’t feel pathetic, or absurd, or even slightly ridiculous, Mr. Fountain, thank you very much. I just feel happy. Really, really happy. My main thought is this: “Holy cow, I did it!”
I suppose it has helped that my husband has fantasies of creating his own software product, and he isn’t much younger than I am. He has worked for big companies and small start-ups, and he occasionally rants over seeing one of his friends — a billionaire, usually, who has sold some world-altering innovative product — featured in Technology Review. In his darkest hours, my husband also wonders if he’s too old to become successful. We prop each other up however we can during these crises in confidence. I know that my husband can create a cool new product and have fun trying to bring it to market. It’s just a matter of time.
Are we ever too old to be called “promising?” Do we really have to feel pathetic or absurd if we don’t succeed at achieving our dreams until we’re in our forties, fifties, sixties, seventies or even beyond?
Not even a little bit, Mr. Fountain. For what is life, without passions to follow? That is the point of it all.

Texas Governor Rick Perry endorsed Mitt Romney today, ahead of Newt Gingrich dropping out of the race, which is expected to happen next week.
“Mitt Romney has earned the Republican Presidential nomination through hard-work, a strong organization, and disciplined message of restoring America after nearly four years of failed job-killing policies from President Obama and his administration,” said Perry in a statement.
“So today I join the many conservative Republicans across the nation in endorsing Mitt Romney for President and pledge to him, my constituents and the Republican Party,” Perry’s statement said.
“I will continue to work hard to help defeat President Obama. American jobs, economic stability and national security depend on electing a new president. Perry initially threw his backing behind Gingrich in January Replica DKNY Clothes, after dropping out of the race just two days before the South Carolina primary.
A source close to the Gingrich campaign told ABC News the former speaker of the House will suspend his campaign at some point next week.

Bloggers ponder the wonderful notion of a Mugabe-free Zimbabwe and try to figure out what Nancy Pelosi really thinks about superdelegates and a prolonged primary season.
Mugabe’s end? After 28 years of brutal authoritarian rule, Robert Mugabe may be on his way out. According to the New York Times, the Zimbabwe president’s attempt to falsify last weekend’s election results are failing, and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai is in negotiation with Mugabe’s top advisers about brokering a transfer of power.

This is Zimbabwe’s Sokwanele quotes one democratic activist: “i am so happy to see change is finally coming to my country. i have worked for 10 years. i think after change we will have a rainbow zimbabwe made up of tolerance and i pray for a prosperous zimbabwe. my president believes that in 100 days we can feed our children again. sehambile Buy BCBG Dresses!!!! (he is gone)” Nancy Reyes at Mugabe makaipa puts one concern to rest: “[T]he major worry is that Zimbabwe will turn into another Kenya. The main difference is that in Kenya, the riots were tribal factions backing different men. In Zimbabwe, the Ndebele oppose Mugabe, but many of the opposition leaders, including Morgan Tsvaigirai, are of the majority Mashona tribe. So unlike Kenya Replica DKNY Clothing, you do not have danger of a tribal war.”
But at the New Republic’s Plank Buy Bandage dresses, James Kirchick, who knows Mugabe’s history well Chloe Dresses sale, is wary of celebrating the fall of the tyrant just yet: “[W]hile it’s tempting to hold out hope that reports of his imminent demise are true, there is very little about Zimbabwe’s history or Mugabe’s own behavior to suggest that he would ever retire without handpicking a successor, or that he would ever be forced out office without a fight.” As Lawhawk at A Blog for All cautions: “Mugabe will have to be given quite the golden parachute to make that happen. He still has support from the military and unless the military sees the writing on the wall and chooses to follow the election results that show the opposition clearly winning, they may continue to enable Mugabe’s hold on power to the detriment of all Zimbabweans.”
But Kel at the left-wing Osterley Times notes: “[T]he speed with which the results are being delivered, alone, tells us that Mugabe has been thrown off course and is frantically trying to fix things in his own favour. It’s interesting that reports are coming out that he has been persuaded from simply pulling off a military takeover, as I would have imagined this to have been the first place his mind went.”
Ed Morrissey at Hot Air says: “[t]he international community needs to increase its pressure on the situation as well. The West has no influence with Mugabe, but it does on his African associates. South Africa’s Thabo Mbeki has been one of Mugabes’ closest allies, to the shame of Mbeki’s own nation. Britain and the US should make clear to Mbeki his responsibility in convincing Mugabe to abide by the actual will of his people and depart forthwith.”
Read more about Mugabe.
Nancy’s about-face: House Speaker Nancy Pelosi previously said Democratic superdelegates should vote according to the will of the people (read: for Obama), but she’s changed her mind, apparently. She told Good Morning America: “These superdelegates have the right to vote their conscience and who they think would be the better president, or who can win, but they also then should get involved in the campaigns and make their power known there.” Now how’d that happen?
Conservative Jimmie at the Sundries Shack feels sorry for Pelosi: “A smart person in her position would have ducked every election question. The Speaker of the House doesn’t ahve a lot to do with the election and you could forgive Pelosi for wanting to stay out of the steel cage match that the primary has become. Besides, she has plenty of other stuff to do, like seeing if she can hit single digits before November. Instead, she decided Buy Emilio Pucci Dresses, what the heck Replica Christian Audigier Clothes, why not just see if both of her feet could fit into her mouth in the same week.”
Wonkette describes Pelosi’s history of statements about the election as a journey from ”Pelosi is just another Obama freak riding the Hope Express all the way to President McCain’s inauguration day” to “In other words, she is totally gay for Hillary Clinton. Right?” In conclusion? “What a tease.”

2010 Cadillac CTS Sport Wagon Monterey debut – Click above for a high-res gallery
After speaking this morning with Cadillac’s product communications manager, David Caldwell Fake Wyler Watches, we’ve fleshed out some near-term product plans for General Motors’ luxury brand – in particular the timetable for the 2010 CTS Sport Wagon. The automaker’s Lansing Grand River plant is scheduled to begin building the stylish rear-drive load lugger in early May, and the first examples should be at dealerships around Memorial Day (May 25) Fake Vacheron Constantin Watches, or perhaps early June.
Cadillac’s first-ever U.S-market station wagon (no, the SRX crossover doesn’t count) is expected to offer a reasonable 25 cubic feet of space beneath its rakish rear glass, and while it rides on the same 113.4-inch wheelbase as its sedan counterpart Replica Seiko Watches, the wagon will actually be .3-inches shorter. The model looks to be particularly important for GM’s fortunes in Europe Where find Replica Calvin Klein Watches, where the luxury division is still struggling to gain traction against the entrenched domestics. While being something of a fringe interest in the U.S. Buy Cheap Replica Dior Watches, sport wagons do solid business in Europe, and the overseas-only BLS Wagon has played largely to lukewarm reviews. Back home in the States, Cadillac expects just 20 percent of CTS customers to opt for the estate version Fake Hublot Watches for sale, while the European model mix is slated to be more along the lines of a 60 percent/40 percent split in favor of the wagon.
So… what about the CTS Coupe? As we reported in January, the stylish two-door’s production plans remain firm for next year, despite company-wide cutbacks and rumors to the contrary. While that’s still later than Cadillac had originally hoped, officials say the delay will give them the opportunity to focus on launching the Sport Wagon as well as the 2010 SRX replacement. No official word on the likelihood of a CTS-V Coupe or Sport Wagon, but mules of the former have already been spotted, so perhaps we’ll get lucky.
